The Differences in Green Tea

There are a few variations of green tea on the market, and it can get confusing when deciding what green tea to buy. Brand name manufacturers often add green tea to different blends in order to boost the nutritional value of the product, or try to improve the flavor of the tea. Green tea provides energy, speeds up the metabolism, increases focus, and contains a wide range of antioxidants. Different types of the green tea does that in varying degrees. In order to decide which one to purchase, it would help to be able to distinguish which green tea does what.

White green tea is hand picked from the plant early in the growing season. it is delicate, rare, and more expensive than other green teas because of how it is harvested and how it is processed. Once they are hand picked, the leaves are rapidly steamed and then dried. That minimal amount of processing means that there is a higher concentration of antioxidants in white tea than in regular green tea. The white tea also contains less caffeine and has a mild and sweet almond flavor. It is not bitter so it can be enjoyed without adding milk or sugar. Regular green tea has more caffeine because it is harvested later in the season. It contains about two thirds the amount of a regular cup of coffee. The taste can be a little bitter because it goes through more processing steps and is partially fermented. The leaves are steamed, fired, and then rolled. It costs less than white green tea, but is also has less of a concentration of antioxidants.

Matcha green tea is cultivated in Japan and has the highest level of antioxidants among all types of teas. That is because it is made from the whole plant. In its purest form, which is called the ceremonial grade, the tea powder is thick and does not dissolve instantly in water. It has to be blended with a whisk or blender to keep it from clumping up in water. This type of green tea is believed to reduce the risks of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, respiratory issues, and poor circulation.
